On average, adults need 7 to 8 hours of sleep each night, whereas most children and adolescents need an estimated 9 to 10 hours of sleep. However, since everyone has different sleep needs the key to healthy sleeping seems to be a consistent pattern of quality sleep, rather than the number of hours one sleeps.

Many things can affect the quality of your sleep. Stress, caffeine, medications, and certain foods can prevent one from getting a good night’s sleep. In fact, poor sleep for any length of time can lead to mood disturbances, lack of motivation, decreased attention span, inability to concentrate, low energy levels and fatigue. Similarly, lack of sleep can result in exhaustion, poor work performance, irritability, anxiety, and other medical problems.

“According to the National Sleep Foundation’s 2001 Sleep in America poll, nearly 7 out of 10 Americans said they experience frequent sleep problems, although most have not been diagnosed.” Men, women, young, and old are all at risk for developing a sleep disorder which can wreak havoc on your health and life. Disordered or abnormal sleep is often a cause of major medical problems such as heart disease, strokes, and high blood pressure. As a result, people with sleep disorders seek healthcare more often and have more absenteeism at work than those who get sufficient sleep. Furthermore, research shows a possible association between sleep loss and obesity. Poor sleep may have an adverse effect on our ability to metabolize sugar which may result in an increase in hunger and appetite. Therefore, sleep deprivation may lead to overeating and eventual weight gain.

There are many other signs and symptoms of sleep disorders. If you experience any of the following, you may have a sleep disorder: Fatigue, Excessive Daytime Sleepiness, Sexual Dysfunction, High Blood Pressure, Memory Lapses, Muscle Soreness / Paralysis, Snoring, Difficulty Concentrating, Morning Headaches, Weight Gain / Loss, Dry Mouth / Sore Throat, Irritability, Irregular Heartbeat / Rhythm, Insomnia, Frequent Nighttime Awakenings, and Leg / Arm Twitching.
